Canya Ponga’s sub 29 second run at Sandown

There’s a new name lighting up the Sandown circuit – Canya Ponga.

The Anthony Azzopardi trained youngster scorched around the track on Thursday night, clocked 28.99 seconds over 515 m and clocking the fastest time of the night.

“He’s always had the ability and has always run good time,” Azzopardi said.

“He just hasn’t had much luck in his career. He was missing the kick early days, but he’s getting the jump right now – and that’s making all the difference.”

In just seven starts, the exciting prospect has notched three wins and three seconds, a strike rate that speaks to his growing consistency.

Canya Ponga is a son of Hooked On Scotch and Joyful – bred by Jessica Windiate.

The performance could also be his ticket into the upcoming Shootout at Sandown in mid-November – a race reserved for the fastest in the business.

With his newfound box speed and a sub-29 on the board, Canya Ponga is officially on the rise.
